We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Fuatino Melegalenuu To'alepaiali'i Ah Sam MNZM, known lovingly as Mele, on the morning of Monday, 15th April. Mele was a cornerstone of the Mā community, dedicating over 30 years to nurturing the growth and development of both students and staff.
Mele served as Deputy Principal and as Acting Principal of Mā and was a pioneer in the establishment of a languages block in 2012, aimed at enriching Māori and Pacific learning. Her significant contributions to Pacific language education were recognised in 2022 when she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with Mele’s family, friends, and all who knew her in the Mā and wider Pasifika communities. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered for her dedication and love.

New Principal appointment - Mr Tuiletoa Tagaloa
We are thrilled to announce Geraint Tuiletoa Tagaloa as our new Principal, marking a new era of excellence for our school.
Dear Mā whānau,
We are thrilled to announce Geraint Tuiletoa Tagaloa as our new Principal, marking a new era of excellence for our school.
Mr Tuiletoa Tagaloa is joining us from his current role as Deputy Principal at One Tree Hill College.
His educational leadership, commitment to enhancing student success and passion for the strengthening of community ties will help to lay the foundation for an exciting future at Mā.
Mr Tuiletoa Tagaloa’s educational philosophy and dedication to innovation match our core values, ensuring a learning environment where mutual respect and responsibility flourish. He champions an inclusive approach that embraces the unique needs of our diverse student population.
As we welcome Mr Tuiletoa Tagaloa, let us unite in support of his leadership and the fresh perspectives he offers. Together, we are poised to enrich Mā as a nurturing ground for aspirations and a hub of lifelong learning.
Mr Tuiletoa Tagaloa will officially begin his new role as Principal here at Mā on 20 May 2024 during Term 2.
New Presiding Member of the Mā Board
We are excited to introduce our school board’s new Presiding Member - Maria Aka.
Of Cook Islands heritage, Maria Aka dedicates herself to the community and has been actively involved in school board roles for over ten years, with a strong focus on supporting tāngata whaikaha. Her diverse experience includes roles in Information Technology, Finance, Accounting, and as a Relationship Manager in the vocational education field, alongside her duties as treasurer for the Vagahau Niue Trust.
As the Presiding Member of Mā, Maria’s vision is clear: "Our primary aim is to guarantee that every student receives a quality education that prepares them for future success. To do this, we need to raise academic standards, provide more support for our teachers, and foster greater community engagement. Together, we can create an environment that supports our students' academic achievements and personal growth."
New vans from the Hugo Charitable Trust create exciting new opportunities for our students
Mā wants to express its deep gratitude to the Hugo Charitable Trust for the generous donation of $50,000 at the end of 2023 which, together with a school contribution, has allowed our school to purchase two new LDV vans.
Maryanne Green, the eldest daughter of Irish philanthropist and businessman the late Hugh Green, known in Ireland as Hugo, founded the Hugo Charitable Trust in May 2017 to continue Hugh’s philanthropic legacy and to give back to the people of New Zealand. Since 2017 the trust has donated over $16 million to charitable causes around New Zealand and their head office is now based in Arrowtown.
Mā is a secondary school located in the heart of Māngere.
Departing principal Tom Webb says the school is representative of the community’s vibrant culture, with a high proportion of Pasifika and Māori students and these vans will unlock a range of opportunities for pupils.
“Our students are very active and represent the school in many different events around Auckland and further afield. Transporting students to these events is a challenge and adds costs when we have to rely on hired coaches or taxis if our school van is not available. Therefore, these vans are making a big difference to our school and our students.
“They give us far greater access to opportunities outside the school such as sports games and tournaments, educational trips, career and pathways development programmes, performing arts activities and cultural activities. They have already been used by staff around the school and our students have benefitted already with our 275 Rangatahi Xplorers trip to Rotorua and our Gateway to the World careers experiences.”
Antonio, who was a Student Leader in 2023, says the vans not only open up new opportunities but look good too.
“The vans are spacious and it is nice to know that we can just get in them and go to cool places which help us learn about our topics.”
While Dorian, another 2023 Student Leader, says the hurdle of needing to rent expensive buses is no longer an issue.
“What I like the most about the new vans is that we can do things like UE Camp and school outings for cheaper. When thinking about this in our sustainability class, it is economically and socially positive for our school as it saves us money, and also improves learning opportunities.”
And Mikayle, Ma’s 2023 Head Student, says the school is hugely grateful to the Hugo Charitable Trust.
“Thank you to Hugo Charitable Trust for investing in our school and our students’ future. At this UE camp we have had the opportunity to gain the best University Entrance results for our school and this was only possible because barriers to transport were reduced.”

Auckland Transport and our contractor Nayler Contractors Ltd are set to start work on constructing a raised Pedestrian crossing outside 24 Bader Drive in Mangere.
Where: Outside 24 Bader Drive, Mangere (Outside Ma)
When (start date): 15 January 2024 Hours of work 7am to 5pm and 7pm to 5am
Please note: The traffic management will remain in place 24hrs
For (duration): Approximately 4 - 5 weeks (weather dependent)
The work we’re doing.
We’re doing this work to maintain and improve your neighbourhood and to keep our communities safe. The drawings overleaf show where we’ll be working and the traffic management that will be in place. The overview of works consist of the following
• Installation of new pram crossings
• Construction kerb line and vehicle crossings
• Construction of speed table
• Line marking and signage.
We’ll do our best to start the work on time. Factors such as wet weather could mean a delayed start. If the delay is significant, we’ll notify you. We know our work can be a bit loud, and that noise – particularly at night – can be disrupting.
We try our best to avoid working at night but sometimes it is necessary in order to avoid wider disruption on the network or to get the job done faster. If we have to work at night, we’ll do our best to keep noise levels down.
We’ll handle traffic flow in and out of the area
We will implement a one-way traffic control on Bader Drive throughout the duration of the works. Traffic flow will be maintained on Bader Drive heading northwest towards McKenzie Rd. Traffic heading southeast on Bader Drive will be detoured through Ventura Street and Elmdon Street.
Please follow all signs, and traffic directions. On-street parking will be limited while we carry out the work. You may need to either park on your property or on a side road and walk to your property.

This year’s theme for ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – Cook Islands Language Week is 'Ātuitui’ia au ki te au peu o tōku kāinga Ipukarea, which means, "connect me to the traditions & culture of my homeland".
The 2023 theme is an extension of last year's theme of ‘Ātuitui’ia au ki te Oneone o tōku ‘Ui Tupuna, or "connect me to the soil of my ancestors".
This year, one of our Cook Islands students Tavake Kamana was part of the steering group who came up with the Cook Islands Language theme which is pretty exciting.
During the week we had daily activities including dancing, discussions on the Cook Islands language and kai.
It was an amazing time of celebration for the whole school whanau.

PPTA - Teacher's Strike
The PPTA has advised the Ma School Board that its member teachers at our school will be taking strike action on Wednesday, 29 March 2023 from 8.30 am – 3.30 pm.
Dear Parents & Caregivers
Industrial Action – PPTA Teachers’ Strike on Wednesday 29 March 2023
The PPTA has advised the Ma School Board that its member teachers at our school will be taking strike action on Wednesday, 29 March 2023 from 8.30 am – 3.30 pm.
The School Board has carefully considered the availability of non-union teaching staff and have decided that we are not able to provide normal instruction during the strike so the school will officially be closed for instruction during the above times.
If making alternative arrangements for care is difficult, we can still supervise a small number of students if required. Please contact the office 275 4029 to indicate if your child/children will need this.
We know that this is inconvenient for parents and students alike however, please be assured that student safety is our main concern.
Thank you for your understanding. Please contact, Mrs Ah Sam, (our Acting Principal) if you have any queries relating to this decision.
Yours sincerely
Board Presiding Member
on behalf of the Ma Board
